How do I dye my dark blonde hair light blonde at home without turning it orange?

I have bought hair dye from drugstores (Loreal Dream Blonde) and from Salon supply store, using Conair and Loreal Mega Blonde. I have bought light ash blonde colors and light natural blonde. I want to dye my hair on my own … what am I doing wrong?

    My wife has dark blonde/lt. brown hair and she uses Loreal Salon Selectives, light ash color successfully.
